This is a deliberately ugly painting.
Death is ugly.
We love to look at faces;
To read them;
To ask what kind of person is this?
There is a special area in our brains
Devoted solely to recognizing faces.
We see faces on the Moon;
On Mars;
In random paintings.
We love beautiful, robust, happy,
Smiling, but also serious faces.
We turn away from severe disfigurement.
This painting is ugly because
these faces
Are chopped up, mixed up;
To represent the reality
That all these beautiful people
Are dead, deteriorated,
Disintegrated, atomized,
Gone forever,
For no good reason.
Death is ugly. |
